Group therapy in Hamden, CT, and online for residents of ConnecticutNew York City, and Massachusetts.

Group Therapy provides a unique opportunity to learn from each other, as well as a professional group leader. Groups can be designed in order to help you learn techniques to manage stress and emotions, receive support, and heal.

There are times when we need to feel that we are not alone in our struggle, and group therapy can offer that validation and encouragement. There are times when it may feel more comfortable to meet with other peers, as opposed to seeing an individual therapist, and group therapy allows for this structure. There are times when it may be more effective to learn from others, and group therapy provides an effective means of hearing others’ stories.

Therapy groups typically meet weekly between 45 and 90 minutes. Each group has a professional group leader and group size is capped at 8 in order to ensure the best quality experience for all.

Group Therapy in Connecticut Frequently Asked Questions

What is Group Therapy?

Group therapy is a type of therapy wherein multiple individuals meet together with one therapist in order to learn about or address a common problem, such as depression or addiction. Group therapy can be supportive in nature, where the primary goal is to find a source of validation and community around your experiences. Group therapy can also be more teaching-oriented, where the goal is to learn specific techniques to cope more effectively with difficult situations.

Sometimes there are very specific groups, like a DBT Skills Group, that are intended to teach specific skills associated with that therapeutic approach.

How does Group Therapy work?

Group therapy is unique in that it provides an opportunity to learn from your peers, as well as an experienced counselor. Typically groups are created with individuals of a similar age who are looking for help around similar topics, like gender dysphoria, suicide ideation, depression, or anxiety. In supportive group therapy, everyone has a chance to articulate their experience, and you learn from each other. In didactic group therapy, the group leader will teach specific skills while encouraging you to participate and describe how that skill can be applied, or has been applied, in your own life.

When is Group Therapy needed?

Group therapy may be helpful if you feel that you could benefit from hearing other’s stories and experiences so that you don’t feel so alone.

DBT Skills Group is required as part of comprehensive DBT because it teaches the DBT Skills that would best allow you to create change in your life.

How long does the Group Therapy process take?

Group therapy can be short lasting, a few months, or long and there typically isn’t a limit on time that you spend in supportive group therapy. A DBT Skills Group usually is 6 months long.
