Though greater acceptance for those who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or queer is developing in our society, many difficulties can still be associated with the process of living your identity fully. We have several years experience working LGBTQ individuals to identify goals and work towards meaningful change.

Whether you are struggling to understand your identity, need support to determine how and when to reveal your identity to others, or are processing loss or stress related to living your identity fully, our LGBTQ affirming therapists here to help you in your journey through our LGBTQ therapy.

We also work with individuals, couples, and families who require mental health care outside of  sexual or gender identity, but whom benefit from a counselor who understands the impact of gender and sexuality in all aspects of functioning.

Connecticut LGBTQ Therapy Frequently Asked Questions

What is LGBTQ Therapy?

LGBTQ therapy is therapy in an affirming environment with a clinician who understands the challenges LGBTQ people experience on a daily basis. Sometimes people attend therapy to directly examine sexual or gender identity, in which case, therapy is focused on clarifying identity. In addition sometimes people come to therapy for other difficulties, like depression and anxiety, and it is helpful that the clinician you work with has an understanding of the difficulties the LGBTQ population experiences.

How does LGBTQ Therapy work?

LGBTQ therapy works just the same as any indvidual therapy, in that you would meet one on one with your therapist, at a frequency that you decide together has the most likelihood of success. In session you can work on better exploring and understanding your sexual and/or gender identity. If identity is established and you are struggling with other factors, such as depression or anxiety, then the conversation and strategies will be centered around reducing those symptoms, with a clinician familiar with the LGBTQ culture.

When is LGBTQ Therapy needed?

LGBTQ specific therapy is needed if you are questioning your sexual and/or gender identity and would like some help in that exploration. It is also helpful if you have been in other therapy relationships where you felt you had to explain and educate your therapist around queer concepts, culture, or difficulties.

How long does the LGBTQ Therapy process take?

Therapy can be variable, with some difficulties resolving in 3-4 months and other processes or goals requiring longer. There is no limit to how long you can remain in treatment.

How do I know if LGBTQ Therapy is right for me?

If you are looking for a safe and affirming environment with a clinician experienced in working with people from the LGBTQ community, then LGBTQ therapy is right for you. If you are looking for help with better exploring and understanding sexual or gender identity, or navigating the process of informing others of your identity, then having LGBTQ specific therapy can be invaluable.
